Chromebook is getting a monthly Chrome OS update to keep users safe

Gone is the days when people have to wait long to get updates for their cellphones and computers. Even Microsoft has turned to the speed of two update features more orderly and shorter a year with many rolling updates including. Software updates for certain applications are even more often, especially web browsers that need to keep up with the development of exploitation and malware that are equally fast. That is why Google has shifted the chrome release cycle to a four-week rhythm and adopted the same speed for Chrome OS later this year.

Chrome may be one of the most widely used software today, not just as a web browser but also as a foundation for other web experiences through chromium. As beautiful and strong maybe, the web can also be a scary place. From malware to exploiting targeting browser bugs, security narratives for internet moves at a faster speed than most other software systems.

Last March, Google announced that it would change the cycle of release releases from six weeks to four starting September 2021. It means that Chrome will not get new features but also a security improvement every month, at least for bugs that do not require direct patches. Chrome, however, is not the only platform facing the web Google and Chrome OS that depends on the web that is safer as a browser.

As a result, Google will also switch Chrome OS to the same rhythm with Chrome Browser. Starting Q4 2021, around November or December, the Chrome OS milestone will also arrive every four weeks, not six. In theory, the Chromebook owner only needs to wait a month to get new features and, more importantly, security patches.

This switch, according to Google, is in line with the four pillars of Chrome OS “security, stability, speed, and simplicity.” Of course, it can also be a two-edged sword and fast launch can also generate fast bugs. Google fortunately has proven its abilities with a six-week chrome cycle and Chrome OS so far.

For the peace of their mind, education and the company’s customers will be offered a new channel with a six-month cycle that is much slower, even though the right details will still come. For those who served on version numbers, there will be no M95 release so that the September Chrome M94 switch will be synchronized with Chrome OS M96 later this year.
