Polestar has just found a great companion of EV potential

EV-Maker Polestar has inked an agreement with South Korea Tech Firm SK SK Inc, with the two companies that explore the development of electricity vehicles and new battery systems. Polestar, a collaboration between Volvo and Geely, currently has a completely electric model for sale, although Polestar 2 will be followed by an electric crossover, Polestar 3.

Although the relationship between Volvo and Polestar, and their respective alignments of EV, it was a bit confusing initially, the Remito de Polestar has focused on the electrical operation where Volvo has an electrical unit as one of several options in its portfolio. However, there is a clear superposition between the two automakers, since Geely’s property brands play the economies of scale involved.

However, this new Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between Polestar and SK Inc, however, could add a little extra distance. The agreement is still in the early stages, but the two companies say that “they will evaluate the possible collaboration” throughout, from the EV battery technology, the systems related to the battery and semiconductors. “The scope will also include possible business opportunities, such as the supply of batteries for upcoming vehicles,” says Polestar.

As always with these mous, there are no guarantees that any final agreement will work. “Both companies will now carry out technical studies, sustainability and cost feasibility for each area to assess the association potential,” explains Polestar, saying that the addition of adding it “expects to provide more details of these conversations in the future”.

Even so, there is a good amount of potential if the details can be presented. SK Group is the third largest conglomerate in South Korea, formed by more than 120 subsidiaries including SK Hynix, the huge producer of memory semiconductors. Other divisions focus on telecommunications, battery and energy technology, along with specialized solar components and more.

“With this MOU, we can evaluate the opportunity to jointly develop battery technology for high performance automobiles and other commercial offers, with an approach to supporting our significant global growth plans,” said Thomas Ingelth, Polestar CEO, said of the agreement .

Earlier this year, SK, that is, the technology, which makes the materials of the Li-ion ion battery, raised $ 2 billion in an OPI. It was yarn of SK innovation, which still has about 61 percent of the company, in 2019, and has battery manufacturers such as Panasonic and Samsung SDI among its customers. On the line, South Korea’s signature is looking for solid state batteries such as the next generation of energy technology. They are expected to be more dense power than Li-ion versions, providing more performance and range.
