The British government has unveiled a set of measures aimed at curbing Russian intelligence operations within the United Kingdom, including the expulsion of Russia’s defense attache amidst allegations of espionage.
Home Secretary James Cleverly asserted that these measures are intended to counter what he characterized as the “reckless and perilous activities” of the Russian government across Europe.
As part of the response, Maxim Elovik, identified as a Russian colonel and described as an “undeclared military intelligence officer,” will be expelled. Furthermore, diplomatic privileges will be withdrawn from several Russian-owned properties suspected of serving as intelligence outposts. Additional constraints on Russian diplomatic visas and visits are also slated for implementation.
Cleverly cautioned against anticipated reactions from the Russian government, anticipating accusations of Russophobia, conspiracy theories, and hysteria. He stressed that such tactics would not sway the British government or populace.
In retaliation, the Russian embassy in London dismissed the British measures as unfounded and pledged an appropriate response.
Ongoing tensions between the UK and Russia have included allegations of targeted assassinations, espionage, and cyber warfare. The UK has responded by imposing sanctions on affluent Russians and intensifying efforts to combat money laundering through London’s real estate and financial sectors.
These latest measures coincide with ongoing criminal proceedings in London alleging acts of espionage and sabotage by individuals acting on behalf of Russia. The government cited instances of Russian interference in various countries, including Ukraine, Germany, Poland, Bulgaria, and Italy, encompassing cyber operations, dissemination of disinformation, airspace violations, and GPS signal disruption.
Foreign Secretary David Cameron underscored that these actions convey a resolute message to Russia that its conduct will not go unchallenged.
Maxim Elovik, who has been stationed in the UK since at least 2020, was summoned to the UK’s Ministry of Defense following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022. He has been photographed paying homage to Soviet soldiers who perished during World War II in both London and Manchester.
