Tips when applying vinyl stickers and decals

Are you new to the sticker universe and unsure how to exactly go about applying your paper and vinyl stickers? Or do you just want to double-check you are applying them in the best way possible?

No matter where you are in your sticker journey, this article will ensure you will know exactly what to do when your little adhesive-backed beauties arrive.

Before we have a look at that, we need to clarify the basic terminology used around stickers. When collecting information, you will likely stumble across terms like graphics, labels, stickers and decals. At the most basic level, all of these terms refer to paper or plastic pieces with an adhesive on the back.

Yet, it can be helpful to keep in mind how printing companies differentiate between these. Stickers are usually cut individually, whereas labels come on sheets. Through this, labels are ideal for product labels and quick to apply. Decals are larger pieces that are still individually cut.

  1. Match your stickers to your surface

The first question you need to ask yourself is what surface your sticker will be applied to. This determines which adhesive strength your sticker should have to ensure that your stickers will not peel or lift.

There are three categories of glue available: removable, permanent and high-tack. You only want to use a removable adhesive for very short-term applications or when you are worried about the paint peeling off your surface. A permanent adhesive is a true all-rounder and can be used for indoor and outdoor, long-term and short-term applications. High-tack adhesive, on the other hand, is ideal for industrial uses or to apply to low-energy surfaces like rubber.

Besides the adhesive, you also want to think about your material. Will you be giving your stickers to customers? Then white vinyl stickers are great. Do you want to apply them to a glass surface? Transparent stickers will look amazing. Or, if you are an environmentally conscious brand, choose sustainable stickers to go with your branding.

  1. Start off clean

Once you know what you need and have received your stickers, you can get started. But before you get sticking, you want to make sure you are applying them to a clean surface.

This way, you can ensure that neither fluff nor dirt will get caught under your stickers. This can impact the adhesion of your sticker and cause unnecessary bubbling.

We recommend using an alcohol-based cleaner to disinfect your surface. A few drops on a cotton bud are already enough, and this will only take a few seconds. Make sure you let it dry before applying your stickers.

  1. Be patient

No matter if you are applying wall decals or laptop stickers, do not rush their application. Taking your time will save you a lot of frustration and allow you to reposition your sticker until you are happy with its position. Stickers have a pressure-sensitive adhesive. Once pressure is put on them, the adhesive is activated, so go easy until you are 100% sure.

Then, peel your sticker off the backing paper, pick it up by its corners and lightly place it in the right spot. Only start applying pressure once you have found the perfect position.

  1. Work from the center

If you are happy with your position, start applying pressure to the center of your sticker. We recommend working your way outwards from there to remove any air that might get caught underneath the vinyl. There are specialist tools available, but your thumb or a credit card will do the trick as well.

Press down firmly and create small circles as you go along. There is no need to put too much pressure on. This can stretch the material. Whereas with the right amount of pressure, you can remove imperfections easily.
