Protect Jewish students, UK PM to tell university heads amid Gaza protests

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has taken decisive action in response to pro-Palestine protests, calling for a meeting with university leaders across the UK to address concerns of antisemitism on campuses. The meeting, scheduled for May 9, follows reports of antisemitic incidents during demonstrations, including chants and heckling targeting Jewish students.

Expressing concern over the disruption caused by a vocal minority on campuses, Sunak’s office emphasized the need to halt harassment and antisemitic abuse. The decision was prompted by protests at prestigious institutions like Oxford and Cambridge, with government officials raising alarms about encampments on university grounds.

Originating at Columbia University in the US, pro-Palestine protests have spread globally, prompting Sunak to convene with vice-chancellors to uphold the values of rigorous debate and respect for all community members. The meeting will specifically address the rising antisemitic abuse directed at Jewish students in the UK, with input from the Union of Jewish Students, representing thousands of students across Britain and Ireland.

While not as widespread as in the US, concerns persist over the potential escalation of demonstrations in the UK. Sunak’s preemptive measures align with data from the Community Security Trust, indicating a significant increase in antisemitic violence, prompting a firm stance against racial violence and assurances that students can report such incidents without fear of reprisal.

The government’s commitment to addressing racial violence contrasts with previous attempts, such as in 2023 when then-Interior Minister Suella Braverman’s handling of pro-Palestine protests led to her dismissal. Now, the government underscores its zero-tolerance policy towards racial violence and emphasizes support for students facing discrimination.
