The joy over the next big os iteration was scolded by the most important question of all, “Will it run on my smartwatch?” Unfortunately, Google’s official statement is to wait for its official statement, and manufacturers other than fossils have been ambiguous about their commitment to use the current Smartwatch OS on the market. That has, in turn, asks questions about the requirements of the upcoming OS hardware, which is now resolved by saying that even the Snapdragon Wear 3100 platform is almost three years able to run using OS 3.0.
Newer and stronger software sometimes requires stronger hardware. It is probably one of the theories behind the improvement in the use of upcoming OS and the reason why some smartwatch makers have been willing to commit to updating that can be used. Instead, they may follow the fossil instructions and only promise the software for the upcoming premium hardware.
The speculation naturally puts a Qualcomm platform that can be used in negative light. After all, Snapdragon Wear 3100 is not new and not too strong even when it was launched back in 2018. To say that using OS devices left behind in the hardware department would not really underestimate. Apart from the perception, Qualcomm insists the chipset is more than able to support anything that makes Google throw it.
In a statement to Xda, a Qualcomm spokesman said that Snapdragon uses 3100, 4100, and a 4100+ platform can run using OS 3.0. Along with the guarantee, the statement might be one of the few times we hear the release of the next OS Wear called the name “Wear OS 3.0”, especially those from close partners.
Of course, just because that doesn’t mean it will happen. The existing smartwatches that run Wear OS 3.0 will still depend on the releasing board support package and OEM use it to build updates for those that can be used. Considering the work needed to make it happen, it will not be surprising if most OEMs suddenly get selective amnesia about smart watches that they have launched and only focus on the latest or upcoming.
