YouTube prohibits election and gambling advertisements at the top of the veranda

YouTube will no longer allow certain types of ads in Masthead, ad units that appear at the top of the veranda. Specific election and political advertisements, and those related to gambling, alcohol and prescription drugs, are now prohibited from appearing in the slot.

You will not see ads that refer to online gambling, offline gambling or social casino games running on the veranda. Ads will also not support political candidates emerging. Ads on political problems may still appear in the slot, but YouTube will review them based on cases per case, according to Axios. Updated policies will immediately apply.

YouTube homepage is one of the most visited web pages in the world and Masthead is the main real estate for advertisers. YouTube has shifted from allowing them to take over Masthead for a full day, instead of turning to the targeted model for the ad. Donald Trump re-election campaign bought an ad slot on election day in November, before the change it came into force.

“We regularly review our advertising requirements to ensure they balance advertiser and user needs,” Google told Reuters. “We believe this update will build the changes we made last year for the Masthead reservation process and would lead to a better experience for users.”

Google paused all political advertisements after the poll was closed on the election day. The company did it again for about a month after the uprising efforts at Capitol Hill in January.
